‘Don’t lose your mind, lose your weight: Rujuta Diwekar’ – part II

20 Oct

This post is a different take on an earlier post “Don’t lose your mind, lose your weight: Rujuta Diwekar” (you can read it here : http://bit.ly/pa80lf ).

Beauty is not skin deep? “I want him/her to take a second look at me”. “I want to put up my best profile pic on Facebook/twitter”. Or, “oh quick, let me change this profile pic – its been 3 days but no one has liked it.” We’ve all been there. As much as we appreciate inner beauty we all love it when it comes in a nice package. There are many diet sheets out there that will make you lose weight quickly. We all want to do it fast. Heck, I went to Rujuta for that reason alone. I just needed to kick-start. But please, please do NOT fall for that trap. You can follow the Rujuta diet for two months – no harm in that. But please don’t make it a way of life. The diet she prescribes is fairly balanced but it is NOT sustainable. You can’t and SHOULDN’t be popping vitamin pills everyday. It is just not right. Think healthy. Think long-term. If you sit down and try jotting down the good stuff you eat and the bad stuff you eat, don’t you think you can do it? Don’t you know that you need to go for that walk or that gym or yoga class? Look inside you and you will find all the answers.

I promised a fellow commenter on this blog (See comments section on the ‘About Me’ post) that I’d put down some general do’s and don’t on healthy eating. So this is for you Aradhana (and for all those lovely people who take time out to read my rants here). I am sharing the stuff I do. I hope it helps :

Do’s:

- Eat one fruit everyday.

- Eat small meals throughout the day.

- Drink lots of water

- Include green vegetable in all main meals (lunch and dinner). This is one rule I never break. I eat salad if nothing else is available.

- Have a bowl of curd everyday. If, like me, you don’t like curd- make raita. (I make cucumber raita, dudhi raita, palak raita, mint raita, white gourd raita, yellow gourd raita). No, boondi raita doesn’t count :) If it is particularly hot, I drink buttermilk instead of curd. No salt, no sugar, no ice. Just water and curd.

- Reduce the intake of salt as much as possible. Slowly reduce the amount of salt you add in the cooking, you will get used to it. No table salt at all.

- Cook in olive oil. I know its expensive. So feel free to ignore this tip. For those who want to use it, do NOT use virgin olive oil. For cooking you can’t use virgin or extra virgin olive oil. Thats only for salads. If you are going to heat up the oil use regular Olive Oil. Remember the green bottle of Figaro? The one your mom oiled your hair with? Yup, you can use this for cooking. No the food taste doesn’t change if you use little oil to cook.

- You can also use Rice Bran Oil (I personally use Ricela). So what I do is I cook in Figaro and use Ricela for frying stuff. Once in a 4 months, I stop using Figaro and cook in Ricela for about a month.

- You have to have protein in your diet. Chicken curry, egg curry, paneer, dal, legumes (like rajma, chole, etc.) any one will do. But please cook in less oil. I often add pureed palak to the gravy. Try it for any of the above. It tastes awesome.

- Whenever you use Palak (Spinach) add a few methi leaves. It won’t taste bitter. The colour of the gravy changes to a dark green. It will add the much needed iron to the diet.

- Switch from white rice to brown rice. Brown rice takes time to cook, is sticky and tastes different but trust me, it tastes very good. I don’t like it for pulao though.

- Eat dinner as early as you can (the most difficult one)

- If you feel bloated, for two days just have lots of fruits, curd, salads and water. Add a slice of bread to give you the requisite carbs though.

- Bread – Buy multigrain only. Brown bread is different than wheat bread. Buy wheat bread not brown bread. The bakery will have it. Anjali Mukherjee brown bread is NOT wheat bread!

Can’t remember any more for now. Will put them in the comments section of this post as and when I remember. If you have tips, please share them with us. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. Btw, I have not added the Dont’s section here. I think we all know what we shouldn’t do :)

Here’s to sensible eating and life-long good habits!

“If you feel bloated, for two days just have lots of fruits, curd, salads and water. Add a slice of bread to give you the requisite carbs though” – exactly how i feel! so from today i am on 5 days fruits, curd, salads and water diet! thanks yummymummy!

Arnab, don’t do it for 5 days! 5 days is too long. Try for three days and see how you feel. Also, before bed time, have Fybogel (isabgol in orange flavour) with lots of water :)

I think the weight loss industry has instilled such fear of regular home-cooked food in our minds that “just have lots of fruits, curd, salads and water” becomes virtuous, while daal, roti, sabzi, rice the culprit. And have to tip my hat to the marketing around laxatives, even the most sensible people seem to take them as a part of daily routine. I guess, keeping food simple is just not ‘intellectually stimulating’ anymore.

Thank you for making an honest comment on my post. Critics like you add honesty to the blog. Just wanted to point out that the “lots of fruits, curd, salads, water” was a tip for when you are feeling ‘bloated’. Thats because fruits and salads will add fibre that the body needs to cleanse itself. Curd will keep the stomach calm and help grow pro-biotic bacteria and water will hydrate your system. I recommended fybogel at night only because it has natural fibre and will not cause any harm to your body. If you consume it, it will help rid the bloated feeling quickly so that you can resume your regular ‘dal-roti-sabzi’ diet :) And yes, white rice, maida etc. are culprits. There is absolutely no nutrition in them! Thank you once again for your comments :)

Did u see Rujuta Diwekar or her team nutritionist. The mail I have got from her office is that to see her or speak to her personally, you need to shell out 1,15,000and not 40000 as you have mentioned?

Are you still taking vitamins supplements? and if yes which ones.

Happy healthy eating and happy diwali:)

      Hi,

I met Rujuta herself. This was a couple of years back so her fee was lower.

No, I don’t take any multivitamins. But I get regular medical check ups to ensure all is well :)

Happy Diwali to you & to your family. Have a healthy and safe one!

For me getting thin is not the goal but staying healthy and without medication is the goal and I am striving for the same.

Roshan, I totally agree with you. In my case, medical treatments brought to me at this door. I am a firm believer in normal home cooked food- dal roti subzi sometimes chawal( being a punjabi- rice is a delicacy to be enjoyed with certain dishes like rajma, kadi , chole, ma ki daal etc). I lost all 8 kgs by eating normal food, and planning to lose more by following the same even though it will take me a yr or so ( just avoid frying and sugary stuff). But at the same time i want to be sure that whatever I am doing is right or wrong, so that I continue to be same once I achieve my target:).

MYM, i sincerely thank you for you from the bottom of my heart – u became my co- walker in this journey. Thanks for being there and hope to trouble you more with my queries like how about a biscuit after post workout carbs with milk and horlicks:) rather than protein shakes and aloo.

    best n love

    Happy diwali once again,
    Aradhana

    Hi ,

I am loving your post! Just came across this blog and quickly completed reading Rujuta’s book. I confused with the workout hours. The books says to eat every 2 hrs but for yoga, you should be empty stomach for 5 hrs? How can one manage that?

    Would Appreciate your updates.

read ur earlier blog related to rujuta’s book…. have read both her books too…

but unlike evrybdy else, i wud request you to suggest me a healthy diet… as in i dont wanna loose weight…

i m 25, 5ft 5 inches, 53 kgs….. i m married for 1.5 yrs n plan to have a baby after 1 yr… rujuta says in her book to have a baby u have to be strong and u shud prepare ur body well in advance…

though i m nt fat but m nt happy with my body… my body structure is pretty well as in no extra fats nywhere but i look pale, dull… especially after my marriage i look more weak despite the fact that i havnt reduced weight…

    i get tired easily… my glowing skin gone for a toss… have dark circles, loads & tons of hairfall… constipation n fisher problem… gastric problems… cold n cough many times… feels like i m 65 n nt 25… n all the problems r becoz of my living style… m very lazy….

to ur knowledge i am having lots of stress on family front… also i m working so m unable to eat properly…

below mentioned is my schedule:- i live in a joint family (my mother in law, 2 brother in law n their wife, 3 kids)

    get up arnd 7.30 am

after 15-20 min of waking up – have handful of dry fruits (pista, cashews, raisins n almonds) (have recently started that)

    get ready till 8.30 am

8.30 – 10.30 am – household work – cooking lunch for evrybdy n stuff, rarely house cleaning
in between i have a glass of milk (sumtimes with cornflakes), sumtimes poha/upma/slice of white bread, rusk, biscuits… if fruits r there, then may be fruits… banana/papaya etc…

    i leave for office at 10.30 am…

at 1.00 pm – have lunch – 2 parantha, sabzi, salad (nt alwys but normally), curd (generally)…

at 5.00 pm – we have snack time in office- where we get poha/chips/kachori/samosa/stuffed kulcha/sandwich etc. (i normally dont eat kachori n samosa)… i do carry fruit to office – apple/orange/pear…

i have just started on muching on roasted chanas but there is no fix time to it…

i come back home arnd 7.30 pm

normally have my dinner between 8.00 pm to 8.45 pm – 2 roti n sabzi… i dont like sweets but take it sumtimes with dinner…

then i go to sleep at normally arnd 11.30 pm…

i luv choclates n icecreams but have recently given up on choclates n its any of the products…. so icecream is automatically ruled out…

i dont feel hungry infact in the above routine….

    i dont do any workout…

i read ur whole blog n rujuta’s blog n trying to make a new schedule for myself… i think i m very much defict on vitamins n other essential nutrients… i feel sleepy evn after having 10 hrs of sleep in office… i dont feel very active… infact when we go for outing i get slaushed out easily… and at times i just go so blank as if i dnt have energy n evn i dnt have energy to stand…

i want to be fit… pls suggest a healthy diet… i knw its very important to be happy to be fit… i m working on stress… but can i expect help frm u…

      Hi Pooja,

Have you tried Yoga? I honestly feel you are stressed out – trying to balance work & family. I hope you are not giving up on your own happiness in the quest of keeping everyone else happy. I am a Marwari so I completely understand the family dynamics ;)

Darling, your skin not glowing, your feeling lethargic, your hair fall etc – will all pass if you are happy. Please stop living for others & start living for yourself!

      Hugs.

      Hey Pooja,

There is nothing really wrong in what you are eating – you seem to be eating every two hours & with all the housework thrown in you have activity to digest it as well. But a few suggestions:
      - add green vegetables to your diet. Basically increase your iron intake (will also stop hair fall)
      - Where do you live? I’m trying to figure out the weather so that we can adjust accordingly :)

Pooja, why don’t you get a routine blood test & check for vitamin deficiency? If not, take multi-vitamins for a month?

The lethargy, dullness, hair fall could be due to the body missing on some nutrition.

    Hey Mumbai Yummy Mummy,

Thanks for your posts on nutrition!

I have a question on whey protein – do you think it is needed post workout or will some other source of protein like sprouted moong or matki, or even curd do?

    • MumbaiYummyMummy (mYm)

      December 12, 2011 at 9:09 am

      Hey Meghna,

If you can, you MUST have whey protein. It is the fastest absorbing protein & post workout your body is a like a sponge – so give it the best possible nutrition.

If you can’t afford it, then you can have it in some other form.

Will try to post a few facts on “why whey protein” over the next couple of days.

      Happy Working Out :)

Thanks so much for the super quick reply! :)

One more question – does a brisk walk for 40 minutes qualify as a workout? Should I have whey protein after that?

My workouts (depending on my mental and physical state) include jogging on some days, brisk walking on some and yoga asanas (with 15 suryanamaskars on others). Should I be having whey protein everytime I do any of these activities?

      December 12, 2011 at 10:24 am

Any intensive physical activity where you exercise your muscles is a workout. Although in most activities (other than yoga/gym) you only end up using a few body muscles & not all! Just make sure that whatever you do your entire body gets a workout!

And yes, I would recommend a whey protein shake after a strenuous activity!

Ok. I take it that I should have whey protein even after a brisk walk because it is strenous!

    Thanks so much! :)

One more question (sorry for ther barrage but I cant help myself) :)

When you talk of increasing green veggie intake at meals, do you mean only leafy vegetables or do bhindi, doodhi, cucumber, parval and the like count?

    • MumbaiYummyMummy (mYm)

      Meghna,

Green vegetables include all green vegetables. But leafy is best!

    Hi mYm,

I just thought of another question (am so sorry for inundating your blog :( )
What is your take on home made makhan and ghee?
I find it very tedious to make ghee at home so will having home made makhan do instead?

    Thanks for your patient replies!

      December 28, 2011 at 2:38 pm

      Hey Meghna,

Yes, home made (white) butter is good! It is intact better than Amul butter. You can make your own ghee with this butter (heat on slow flame). If not u can use it directly instead of ghee :)

Sorry for the delay in responding!

    Hi Mym

In one of your earlier comments you recommended yoga to one of the bloggers. I’ve been wanting to try yoga myself, is there a DVD or book you could recommend?

I don’t live in India, so access to a yoga teacher is a little difficult and I’m a little wary of hollywood-type yoga classes?

    Many thanks in advance

Hi! Yoga if not done properly can cause you more harm than good. The right posture is very important. If you don’t have access to an instructor please pick some other form of exercise. It’s your choice but that’s my honest advice to you. Regards,
